The risk of acquiring cancer rises almost five times for users of alcohol-containing mouthwash. Over the counter mouth washes can contain coal-tar, colorants, synthetic dyes and other petroleum-based chemicals. They also commonly contain formaldehyde, parabens, methyl salicylate, sodium lauryl sulphate, synthetic sweeteners and flavorings, triclosan and thymol. Many of these ingredients are known carcinogens.
I didn’t want to give up mouthwash all together, so I decided to make my own.
Homemade Hippie Mouthwash
1/2 cup purified water
1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
2 tsp baking soda
5 drops essential oil of Peppermint
Shake before use. I find this to work just as well as the store-bought mouthwash I was previously using. It also whitens your teeth. If you gargle with it, the hydrogen peroxide gets bubbly and frothy. These tiny bubbles help disinfect the sinus cavities and can prevent sinus infections.

Can I just boil water for awhile to make sterilized water or do you have to buy it. My water at home is filtered but it is not reverse osmosis

The peroxide will kill any germs in the water. If your water is filtered, it should be just fine.

Wintergreen is a great idea! I’ll try that when this batch is gone. I have used clove oil too, its great if you ever have a toothache.

Ooo-ooo! I love this idea! How *REFRESHING*! I didn’t really stop to think of all the ickies in my mouthwash…and increasing my risk of cancer? No thanks! I’ve got to try this.

Can the peroxide damage the delicate tissues inside the mouth? When I took an official first aid course 10 years ago, the paramedic instructing us told us that peroxide was no longer recommended for wounds, as it worked by sucking oxygen out of the tissue, thus killing it. She said that health inspectors were now pulling it out of businesses’ first aid kits whenever they did routine inspections.

That is why I only use a 3% peroxide solution, and dilute it with water. I wouldn’t recommend straight peroxide.

If you are using 3% peroxide and have it diluted as well, please inform before anyone does anything reckless, ingesting peroxide can be a health hazard and this is not a common knowledge.
