I must admit at one time in my life I was a terrible snob about my facial products. Until I learned that you absorb at least 60% of everything that you put on your skin. I quickly became the household Label Czar! Since then I have learned how to make many homemade beauty products. I have also learned that more than 75% of what I was using was completely unnecessary anyway. Silly me.
I use this face wash in the shower. I have very delicate, dry skin and this is gentle enough to get every trace of makeup and dirt out of my pores without making me shrivel up like a prune.
Homemade Hippie Face Wash
4 oz liquid Castile Soap (I use baby mild)
4 oz purified water
1 oz olive oil (or rosehip seed oil. see here)
5 drop tea tree oil
Pour into a refillable pump type bottle. Shake before use.
This recipe costs me 0.53 cents! I use tea tree oil because my skin is prone to breakouts. This keeps my skin clean as a whistle and pimple free!

I have the driest skin ever. I have started using coconut oil on my face every morning after I wash my face. I would love a recipe for a mud mask for reducing wrinkles and cleaning pores.

Ok I’ll get to work on that. I would also suggest Jojoba oil as a moisurizer. I use that on my face and love it. According to the wrinkle experts 🙂 Jojoba is the closest thing to the natural sebum in your skin.

I now wash mainly with warm water twice a day, no soap, and I use olive oil both to moisturize and remove makeup! Its very cheap because a *little* goes a *Loooooong* way. I’ve never had better skin – Step Away From The Soap! LOL. You might enjoy this one about lovely olive oil…

Sarah, It took me a while too. I tried the oil cleansing method first, and no matter how I adjusted the ratio of the oils it dried my skin out really bad. I have super dry sensitive skin and you would think cleansing with oil would be perfect right? I guess I’m an anomally 🙂

Hi Melissa, Just thought I’d pop in to say; yes! This cleanser is great for breakouts due to the tea tree/melaleuca oil. I just made this today and also added lavender, patchouli and geranium essential oils for their antimicrobial & anti-inflammatory properties. Good luck! 🙂

Hi, I’m just wondering where you purchase your castile soap? You said you could make this for just .53 cents? I can only find Dr Bronner’s castile for $15 for a 32 oz bottle. If I use 4oz of it, that’s $1.88 just for the soap… don’t get me wrong, that’s still super cheap – just wondering if you have a less expensive source for yours 🙂 Thanks!

April, I am lucky to live near a strange hippie store that sells castile soap for $5.99! That is about half the price I’ve been able to find it anywhere else. I think most peoples cost for this facewash would be closer to $2.00, which is still pretty darn good. You can also try finding Castile soap on iherb.com I use the coupon code that they gave me- HIF798 -and get a $10 discount. Plus they have free shipping which i love. I’m a big fan of online shopping when I can.

When you say this cost you 0.53c to make do you mean per bottle? Even so I just can’t see how it only cost 0.53c?
Maybe the ingredients are just more in the UK? For example a 1litre bottle of dr Bronners castille soap (baby) is £13.99 almost 20dollars!
